4x4 Parts FAQs

When was 4x4 drive technology first invented and put to use?

The origin of 4x4 driving technology is a little disputed. In 1902 Jacobus Spyker came up with the first mechanical 4x4, which used a transfer case and drive shaft system. However, some people claim that the inventor of the 4x4 was Ferdinand Porsche, as he attached electric hub motors to each wheel of his “System Lohner-Porsche” motorized carriage, which had a similar effect to four-wheel drive, albeit on a carriage.

Either way, the first 4x4 was officially manufactured by the Four Wheel Drive Auto Company in 1911. This company primarily created these vehicles for use by the U.S. and British armies during World War I.

Should I get a full-time or a part-time 4x4 system?

That depends on your needs. If you are purchasing an extra 4x4 specifically for the reason of hunting and exploring off-road, a full-time system with all-terrain tires is probably going to be best for you. However, if you will predominantly be driving on regular road surfaces, but like the idea of having four-wheel drive available in case of muddy or snowy conditions, a part-time 4x4 system might be the best fit.

What is rally racing?

Rally racing, or rallying, is a form of motor competition that takes place on modified roads with road-legal cars.

The sport does not use a point-to-point format; rather, drivers drive between control points, and leave at regular intervals. Therefore, rallies can be won either by sheer speed, or by planning the route ahead of time and meeting the ideal journey time between stages.

Since these modified roads usually involve off-road driving, 4x4 vehicles can regularly be seen in rally races.
